Twitter and Conversations...

Technologists tend to be an idealistic bunch. Things are created with purity and community in mind. Eventually of course, the strictly business folks come in and wreck the place.

It happened with the BBS to ISP conversion, it happened on the web with nascar-esq advertising (banner overkill), it's happening with Google and the SEO masterminds (it can't just be me, but isn't it getting harder and hard to find things?), and it's starting to happen with the blogosphere and paid links.

Magazines taking bribes and the mainstream media outlets skewing the news both helped fuel many of the "early" blogging initiatives. That shared focus and identity, that blogging wasn't the mainstream, helped foster a certain level of community. Paid links, paid review sites, misleading advertising placements, affiliate program abuse -- the blogging world is quickly following a somewhat common theme. As it all becomes more and more mainstream, it only makes sense that the initial proponents of the medium start searching for someplace else to hang out.

After SxSW, I thought Twitter had officially run its course. It was fun before hand but at SxSW it became an important tool. It was only natural to expect a let down afterwards I guess. I have to say though, that it seems more and more of the conversations are taking place there. As one community slowly gets overcrowded and commercialized, it would seem that this might be where people are headed.

Twitter's usefulness by itself can be a bit limiting. 140 character messages can only take you so far, and in some ways, I feel like I'm writing on an old-school BBS graffiti wall or typing in a horribly disfunctional IRC channel. It's not so much that twitter is a "better" way to conduct this type of socializing, it's just still a bit more exclusive and its made up of the right people.

What are the take aways of the service itself though? Instant gratification maybe? The "convergence-interface?" The friendly API? Or is it simply something to tide everyone over until the real "next big thing" happens?

Twitterholic gets s shout in NYT...

Great article about Twitter in the NYT, Twitterholic even got a shout out.
Most twitterers communicate with small networks of people they know, but the most popular have thousands of friends and followers. One of the best-loved twitterers, Paul Terry Walhaus, a gray-haired blogger from Austin, Tex., has 9,177 friends and 1,851 followers, according to the tracking site Twitterholic.
Twitterholic = best sunday hack ever. ;)

Twitter's Blaine Cook to Talk on Scaling Rails...

Blaine Cook from Obvious (twitter) posted a comment earlier noting that he will be talking about Rails scalability and the lessons they've learned at the SDForum Ruby on Rails gathering next weekend. Lessons learned, headaches, issues, solutions -- those are the things that will move Rails towards maturity. Great to see Twitter sharing.

If you're interested in that sort of thing and in the bay area, sounds like it will be interesting.

I would twit this on twitter, but its too long...

Leo... Oh, Leo... I'm so disappointed :(

I'm sure we all understand the silliness around intellectual property at this point. I totally understand why Leo left, you gotta protect your own game and all.. But, is Twitter really anywhere near a violation of the trademark TWiT?It's different in the sense that selling apple trees online, or a video game requiring you to eat an apple, or shoot an apple, or use the word apple in a sentence, all have nothing to do with Apple. At least, I think I'm right on this, no?

Anyway, It was this whole "dispute" (if we can call it that) between Ev and Leo that led us to change the terminology on Twitterholic.. I mean.. Why bother upsetting two people whom we deeply respect? Twitterholic is just for fun, so, I mean, whatever, right? Plus, the irony of the whole thing was just so deeply satisfying.

I also feel like our attempt at humor probably didn't help Ev and the gang out any, and for that we're truly sorry. The first instance I could find of Leo complaining about "twit" was a twitter on March 19th complaining about Twitterholic for using the 200+ year old word in a sentence. I know, it seemed crazy to us too, but again.. He's gotta protect his world, I guess... I'd link to the url, but it appears his Twitter page is no longer active. Here was the text though, which someone had sent to me via e-mail:

"Apparently Twitaholic can't count over 2000. Also - we are not TWiTs - we're tweeters. TWiTs is taken, thank you."

Actually, I'm not so sure about that. The definition of "Twit" in this sense, is an act of "Twitting". "Twitting" involves the creation of "Twitters". (American Heritage Dictionary) A twit twitting twitters, or a twit twitted twitters, or I twit some twitters, or... You get the point. It would seem that they are all actual statements. (yeah, I know, I mean... Who knew.).

The word "twit" is also 19th century english slang for someone who does something "rather silly or annoying," (watch Monty Python for reference). This definition seems somewhat fitting in so many ways of course, which is why it was humorous for us to use the word Twit on Twitterholic. Kind of a double meaning thing going on.

Anyway, I'm not a lawyer, don't plan on ever being a lawyer, and really don't care for that type of thing that much as it is, sooo... Maybe I'll get sued by Apple, Leo and Ev for this blog post all at the same time... If I do, I'll make sure to twit it all on twitter.

Wait.. I mean tweet on tweeter, or... something. (sigh)

Neat Twitter Stats...

Twitterholic.com is tracking approximately 7,000 twitter users right now. It'd be more if Twitter could handle their traffic (UPDATE: this wasn't intended to be a knock, scalability is a "high class problem") -- hopefully whatever they figure out will be written up as a case study and the Rails community can finally have a scaling solution in place. Either way, we have decent enough numbers to start generating some neat numbers.

In response to Jason Kottke's post today, here are the averages we're seeing on our side.
